Summer storms and insurance: Are you prepared?

A man wearing a wide-brimmed hat and blue shirt cleans the gutter of a tiled roof with a gloved hand, showing preparedness as he focuses on his task before summer storms arrive.

Summer brings long days and warm evenings, but it also brings fast moving storms that can catch homeowners off guard. Heavy rain, strong winds, and surprise downpours have unfortunately become a part of New Zealand’s summer season, and they often lead to insurance claims. To minimise and mitigate damage from summer storms, here’s a few preparations you can take.

1.      Water damage is the most common issue

Downpours can overwhelm gutters, drains, and older roofing. When water enters the home unexpectedly, it is usually covered, but insurers do check that general maintenance has been kept up. Blocked gutters or worn roof tiles may affect how a claim is assessed. A small amount of pre summer maintenance can make a meaningful difference.

2.      Wind can cause more damage than expected

Loose outdoor items such as furniture, barbecues, sports gear, and trampolines can become hazards in high winds. Claims often involve broken windows, damaged fences, or harm to neighbouring properties. Securing your outdoor area before a storm or before you head away is one of the simplest ways to reduce risk.

3.      Be aware of power surges

Storms can also cause spikes in electricity that damage appliances and electronics. While many contents policies cover this type of accidental damage, older appliances may have limited replacement values. Using surge protectors on key appliances and devices is a practical way to reduce the chance of damage during sudden voltage changes. This is also a good moment to review your contents list and make sure it reflects what you would realistically need to replace.

What to check in your policy

Just as important as preparing your home is understanding how your insurance policy responds to severe weather, since this will guide what support you receive if a claim is needed. When considering if your policy meets your needs, look at:

  • Your excess for weather related claims.
  • Whether temporary accommodation is included if your home becomes uninhabitable.
  • How your insurer treats gradual damage compared with sudden storm damage.
A simple preparation list

Taking a few preventative steps before storm season arrives can significantly reduce the risk of damage and make any potential claims far more straightforward.

  • Clear gutters and drains.
  • Tie down or store outdoor items.
  • Check trees for weak branches.
  • Review your contents inventory.
  • Use surge protectors on key appliances and electronics.
Peace of mind for the season ahead

Summer storms may be a fact of life, but stress does not need to be. With a few simple checks and a clear understanding of your cover, you can enjoy the warmer months knowing your home and belongings are well protected if the weather takes a turn.
